Unlisted shares

These are shares in a private company. They do not appear on a recognised stock exchange. This makes valuation difficult as they do not appear on an open market. In order to provide a valuation you must consider these factors:

• company’s accounts and performance status
• the value of the company’s assets
• the size of shareholding and the shareholder’ rights
• the company’s dividend policy

Speaking to the company secretary or accountant may also provide a better idea of the market value of unlisted shares.
